Thinking Of A Position As A Pet Groomer

By Armand Zrake

Choosing which type of career one wants to spend years of their life in is easier for some than for others. Everyone would love to have a job doing something that they enjoy because that would definitely make going to work much more pleasant. For a person who loves to deal with animals, considering a job as a pet groomer may be the perfect option.

A groomer does more than just bathe and trim an animal. Many times they are able to notice issues that may become a potential health risk if left unattended such as skin lesions, improper dental care or infections of the ear. They work in many forums such as pet shops, shelters, vet clinics and in services offering grooming services.

Becoming qualified to do this job is easier than most because the industry does not yet have any standardized regulations. There are online courses available as well as some schools offering specialized training. Most people in this field, however, choose to get their training on the job, starting as a shampooer and learning the skills by being apprenticed to someone more experienced.

Many people are not aware that being a groomer means more than washing a dog and trimming kitty nails. The number one requirement for this position is being able to relate to unfamiliar animals. This is important because if one can not calm a pet and make it comfortable, attempting to cut its hair could be quite the experience.

In the beginning, grooming consists of shampooing and brushing out a pet's fur to get them clean and free of tangles. In this process, fleas, ticks and other issues may be noticed and treated, and reported to the owner or vet for further consideration. Beginners will also be taught to properly blow dry the fur and clean the ears the right way.

Spotting an experienced groomer becomes more evident when it comes time to give the animal a trim or specialized cut. The best at the job will be familiar with how best to shape each breed in order to highlight their best features. This comes with practice but it is always a good idea to study up and know the proper way to cut a pets fur.

Some basic hygiene details may also be required from time to time in addition to the washing and brushing. When most pet parents bring their little ones in for grooming, they may also ask to have their nails trimmed and their ears and teeth cleaned. Learning to do these things in a way that is safe to both the animal and the groomer will be very important.

For one who is very comfortable working with animals and would like a job doing so, pet groomer could be an excellent career choice. It is a great way to express creativity and to care for the furry companions of other people. The qualifications are lenient and the requirements are easy to obtain so this is a job that could be started either through apprenticeship and without years of classroom study.
