Basic Safety Precautions For Do-it-yourself Plumbing Projects

By Odessa Langhorne

Before you begin any do-it-yourself plumbing task, it is advisable that you take your time to ensure all safety measures are put in place. This way, you will be able to avoid injuries and complete the projects effectively on time. Here are the most basic safety precautions for do-it-yourselfer's to ensure you have a good and safe time making good use of your talent and skills.

Being informed is the first rule of engagement. You should confirm with local building laws and codes that the project you are about to undertake can be done by you. Note that there are some projects reserved only for professionals and which you will be breaking the law should you decide to undertake them. While at it, ensure you know whether the project you are about to undertake requires a permit, and ensure you get it on time.

Because eyes are very sensitive and highly susceptible to injuries when undertaking plumbing projects, the other important safety measure is to ensure your eyes are fully protected. Safety glasses are a must for such things as snaking a drain, using a drill or going under the sink. Small invisible objects can fall down or fly up into your eyes and you might end up requiring specialized medical attention.

By the same token, ensure your lungs are fully protected using a face mask. This is particularly important in projects that involve sawing or sanding. You may end up inhaling tiny dust particles which, needless to mention, can cause serious complications in your lungs. Another important thing to mention is that you should exercise utmost caution when using power tools. Ensure you stick to manufacturer recommendations to avoid possible injuries for wrong use of power tools.

Never work when you feel overly tired, ill, or impaired as you may end up doing more harm than good. If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it is advisable you call in a professional for help, or postponing the project to a later date. Impaired reflexes are a sure way of inviting, otherwise, avoidable injuries, especially when using power tools.

Still on point, never misuse plumbing tools and equipment. Always use them for their main purpose to avoid damage to the tools and/or possible injuries to you. While at it, make sure the equipment you are about to use is well maintained and in perfect working condition, failure to which you may be inviting trouble.

There are some projects that do not necessarily require a professional if you have the time and safety gear to accomplish them. However, should you have any doubts of your competence or if you do not have basic safety gear in place, be sure to contact plumbing contractors, most of whom can be found online.
