The Different Varieties Of Home Siding Materials

By Rory Brown

Home siding materials add character and improves the outside appearance of a house. These items are also necessary to protect the structure from damage due to dirt, water, and the exposure to the elements. There are many varieties of the building materials, from all natural components to synthetic.

There are items that need constant and regular upkeep to maintain the appearance. The most common maintenance activity required is painting and washing. However, there are also others that require only a little upkeep to maintain their appearance.

One material that is used popularly as building material is vinyl. One major advantage of using vinyl siding is the little annual maintenance that it requires. It is available in different colors and designs, which includes horizontal and vertical slats and shakes. The strips can be snapped together easily and a pattern is formed. This type of building material lasts to 50 years with proper care.

Another popular component utilized in the outside walls of structures is the stucco. This is a combination of cement, sand, and limestone. The mixture is applied to the external wall and provides a surface that is hard like concrete. The surface can also be textured or smooth depending on the preference of the owner.

To add durability to the stucco, it is sometimes combined to cement cinder blocks or metal lath. The lath is wrapped around wood framing that creates an anchor. If it is used on the outside the homes, two or three coats are usually needed for proper coverage.

Different stones are also utilized as outer covering of walls. The stones can either be natural or man made. Natural stones such as granite is attached to the external wall using concrete as binder. Artificial stones are produced in panels and are arranged according to the desired outcome. It is usually paired with stucco or vinyl.

A mixture of fiber and cement called fiber cement is also used to cover the outside the walls. This is a much heavier option. Molds are used to create the designs of cedar flakes or wood grain. These home siding materials need repainting and priming every ten years to maintain its appearance.
