The Basics of Effective Pitbull Training

By Geraldine Dimarco

If you're reading this, you already know that pitbulls are among the best things ever created. They are fun, active and one of the healthier breeds of dog there are. You did not make a mistake in adopting one of these fantastic hounds. Now, you want to take it to the next level-training. What are the best training techniques and how can we apply this effectively to our blue pitbulls today?

It doesn't matter what people say, every canine can be trained-including your pitbull. Sure they sometimes seem to be too combative with other animals, but that doesn't mean they cannot be trained. In pitbull training you need to put yourself in your dog's place to be most effective. What will work best with him? The answer is positive reinforcement.

What exactly does it mean to use positive training? This is using positive energy to reinforce a command or desirable behavior. If your dog completes the task you set out for him the right way, lavish him with attention and praise. Pitbulls are very people friendly and they love pleasing you. The problem is really not that they are stubborn and hard to educate-it is that they do not always understand what you want with them that's why he cannot properly execute the command asked of him.

It is critical that you are repetitive and consistent when you train your dog. Humans and animals have very different language capabilities as you can obviously see, so use uncomplicated words and techniques in obedience training. Be patient when your pet doesn't understand what you are trying to tell him right away. Repeating the same commands in the same manner will eventually bring comprehension to his mind and he will begin to do what you ask of him.

If you want to correct a certain behavior, see where your dog is coming from first. Is he being destructive or barking excessively? This might be because they are bored with a lot of pent-up energy inside. Blue pitbulls are one of the most active and energetic dogs there are so you need to let them have their exercise every day. They say a tired pitbull is a good pitbull. You don't want them to get too tired as to be completely exhausted; but you want them to release nervous energy so that they don't become destructive and ruin things around your house.

Now, it is not only physical stimulus that pitbulls respond to, it is also very important that you engage him mentally as well. Keep school as fun and interesting for him by making it proactive. Only take 15 minutes at a time whenever you train him, otherwise you will lose his attention and further training will be futile. Be creative and utilize space without too much going on to lessen distraction.

Remember, pitbull training can be effective in theory, but it needs implementation for it to make any kind of headway in your dog's life. Always be kind to him, but use a strong and firm hand in exercising your authority. This is the foundation of any good training. Have an excellent relationship with your pet and see everything else fall into place when you do.
