Ways To Lower Your Utility Bill In The Summer

By Hedrick Lepsch

Experimental architecture is fascinating because it is artistic and unique. One way that architects add flavor and style to their projects is by designing gorgeous roofs. Some of these roofs can leave us envious and wishing that we had a one like that on our home. Here is an example of how you can design a unique roof followed by some rather interesting examples of unique roofing from around the world.

But the truth is that both mindsets are not entirely true. While solar power and solar energy use in homes is limited in numbers across the country, the technology that makes solar energy use in the home is ready for widespread usage and can be incorporated into the home itself with extreme efficiency.

Besides a unique and classy look, steel roofing is a great way to lower the costs of utilities and is completely recyclable. It also lasts much longer than traditional roofing, so you can be sure that your home looks great for years to come. Here are some unique roofs from around he world.

The Headington Shark: Bill Heine, of Oxford, England decided that he wanted to protest the existence of the atomic bomb. Well, what better way to protest than a roof with a 20 foot shark crashing through its shingles? Heine commissioned a 25 foot shark out of fiberglass and had it placed through his roof. People walking by cover their heads in hopes that a rogue hurricane doesn't drop the enormous beast's brother onto their heads. This certainly doesn't appeal to most homeowners or architects, but it deserves a spot on the list of most unique roofs!

The exact cost of installing solar panels on the home will vary from home to home and is dependent upon several factors including the home itself, the location, and the size of the system being installed. Another drawback to having solar panels on the home is the fact that while after installation the power produced and stored by the solar panels is free, the power source itself can be inconsistent.

Close the right vents. We've been taught since we were small. Cool air sinks while warm air rises. During summer, we want as much cool air as possible, so make sure it doesn't get trapped at floor level. If you have a basement, close the vents there. If you have vents in your floor and ceiling, close the floor ones. This will help improve the efficiency of the cool air that your air conditioner is producing, and make your home cooler faster.

Hotel Marqus de Riscal: Here is some architecture that is pleasing to the eye. This hotel was designed by Frank Gehry (designer of the Guggenheim) and is located in Alava, Spain. The whole roof structure is designed to look like steel ribbons.

With their solar tile mounts and solar panels installed, the costs for powering the home plummet as the home produces free and clean energy on its own. In addition to the free power for the home and the clean energy, those with solar panels on the home may become eligible for incentives offered by federal, state, and local governments including grants and tax breaks.
