Tough Long Island Cost Of Living? Downtown May Save Things

By Eric Santucci

As the economy has gotten worse over the past few years, the smaller (and often more beautiful) communities have suffered the major blow as a result. Places like the various suburbs found on Long Island, New York have been hard hit by the downward spiral that our economy is currently going through. There has been an exodus of residents from these areas and the communities have suffered further because of the strenuous Long Island cost of living that makes it harder to remain in these communities.

The wonder behind Long Island suburbs and towns has always been its variety of things to do. Restaurants, geographical wonders, beaches, entertainment areas and much more has brought in people from all over who wanted the excitement found in the cities, but without the crowds. However, due to the economy and how the job and housing markets have been negatively hit, the Long Island cost of living has forced many people to leave just to avoid the economic hardship.

This downward spiral has not gone unnoticed by many Long Island residents, however. Many have begun to notice that many young people cannot possibly afford to continue living in these areas and are moving out into the cities or to other states in large numbers Build a Better Burb is trying to stall this decline by improving the fun and wonder of Long Island's downtown communities to draw people back. This in effect will turn things around and lessen the Long Island cost of living.

The main strategy that this group is hoping to implement is that by improving and reinvigorating the classic downtown communities will spur small business growth and lure in tourists and new residents alike. This could have a ripple effect that could make Long Island a flourishing area as it sued to be. After all, a beautiful and entertaining downtown district means more people, more people means small business growth, business growth means more housing, more housing means more residents and so on. Changing downtown could improve the entire quality of Long Island in the end.

Though the economic recession blasted popular suburbs and communities on Long Island hard, there are solutions in mind. Build a Better Burb hopes that by taking downtown communities and giving new life to them, these will bring in more residents that will spur on jobs and improve the overall state of the community.
