Careers and Hobbies in Circuit Analysis Design

By Joseph Hivejacker

Learning how to build circuits is a lot of fun and can be very useful for projects around the house or to establish a lucrative career in electrical or electronics engineering. There are many resources available online that are free and help you get started easily. One popular circuit to learn is a LM555 PWM circuit because of its versatility in a variety of applications. It implements some very basic but powerful electrical components that, when combined, produces a circuit akin to those used in millions of different types of electronics.

Integrated circuits, or IC chips, are a combination of transistors in a nicely organized DIP (dual inline pin) package with pins that will easily go into a breadboard or PCB (printed circuit board). 555 timer circuits for PWM make use of this same convenient technology. Although it is possible to build this circuit manually with individual transistors, there is really no reason considering the low cost of the ICs. However, it can be fun and an excellent learning experience to try to build one manually.

Datasheets are available for every kind of IC and many other electrical components, and they are important to understanding the exact type of component you are working with. 558 timer chip are no different, but you will definitely want to look up a good tutorial due to the vague pin-out diagram in the datasheet. The pin-out diagram is vague because this type of IC is one that really only works in conjunction with other fundamental electronics components. This is why a good tutorial, or even just a short video, is essential to understanding tutorials on 555 timer.

PWM timing circuits are used for timing, but they can be used for much more. When you need a very specific pulse-width modulation circuit, for example, you can use one of these ICs to produce a PWM signal needed to control the speed of a DC motor. A DC motor can only be turned on and off, but with a PWM signal, this on-off sequence can be done rapidly with a certain PWM frequency to control the speed of the motor.

You cannot really avoid learning 555 timer circuits tutorials if you plan to get into serious electronics design and want to build your own circuits. Their utility is endless, but the amount of electrical engineering experience you get when building them is perhaps more than when building any other type of entry-level circuit. Start by watching a video on YouTube to get an idea of what exactly it is and what it is capable of doing in simple applications.
