By Claire Redworth

As it is, sometimes you could find that you need to replace window sash cords. Actually, you do not have to call in an expert to do this for you. Well, it could be a challenge if you do not have the knowledge. You therefore, need a DIY guide to sash cord replacement to ensure you do it well.

You begin by removing the stops. To accomplish this, you need to use a putty chisel to scrape off paint between window stops and window casing. Use this chisel to pry off the stops carefully. In some cases, windows come with metal guards that hold it. You need a screwdriver to unscrew the bolts holding these guards. This gives you room to unhook this from the two sides of that window.

Next are the weights that need to be removed too. To reach them, you have to remove the thin wood strips that separate your window sashes. After doing so, you reach the wood panel that covers the wells that in-turn contain the weights. You have to remove all panel screws to reach these weights, and after doing it, simply pull out the weights and loosen it.

The third step is to install the new one. You tie a string around a given weight then feed it through the existing top pulley. Carefully lower it into that area where weight rises and falls. Tie the end of this string to the cord at the pulley top. From the bottom of this pulley, pull down this string till it shows through the bottom. You then untie this string and tie the cord to the weights on the two sides.

The next step involves setting your sash on windowsill, then drawing up these weights with the line. If there is excess of it, cut it off then tie a single knot. The knot is then fitted to the notch available along the window sash. You repeat the same process to the other side of your window. If possible, have someone else hold it for you, so that you can re-string those weights easily.

The final step in this replacement is to install the casing. You re-install all metal guides on both sides of your window. Replace the wooden panels, to cover the weight wells. Reinstall the strips you had removed then fit your window along its guides. To secure all window stops in place, you need a hammer and small nails.

If you have difficulties adhering to any DIY guide to sash cord replacement, get professional help. This ensures you do not waste your time and money. This guide is very useful to those people who operate on a tight budget.
