The Versatile Tail of Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Dog breeds are noted to have different kinds of tails. Some dog breeds have very short tails. Other dogs would not fail to gain the attention of people because the impressive appearance is enhanced by the long well feathered tail. Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Keeshonds are only some of the dog breeds noted to have beautiful long and well feathered tails. Tail docking is a practice commonly done in bulldogs and in other breeds of fighting dogs.

The tail can enhance the appearance of the dog but this appendage does have some other function. The tail is a serviceable body part of a dog although many dog owners would see the tail as just a rather useless appendage of the dog's trunk. The tail is a dog's effective communication tool. Dogs cannot talk but these intelligent animals use body parts to convey what they want to humans and to other animals. Dog owners would easily understand the pet just by looking at the body movements and as well as the position of the tail. Notice how a dog would wag its tail every time the favorite person is seen. A dog that holds the tail up with the tip stiffly wagging is a sign of aggression. A tail that is held under the legs is an indication that something has frightened the pet.

Working dogs can find many uses for the tail. Thornjack, a breed of shepherd dog hold the tail high so that the it can be easily seen among the sheep it protects. The tail is an efficient counterbalance device. Similar to a tightrope walker that uses a balance bar, dogs would use the tail as a counterweight when scaling ledges. The dog's tail is very important both to a human hunter and a pointing dog as it is used to point the location of the game.

Sighthounds and other breeds noted to be very fast runners are endowed with long but thin tails as this type of tail is an efficient appendage that allows these dogs to make sharp turns or to stop abruptly when following a prey. The tail would function as a rudder that makes for efficient steering for retrievers and other dog breeds that work in the water.

Long bushy tail is common in northern breeds as this kind of tail is used by the dog for warmth. These dogs would usually sleep outdoors and as a protection against the elements, the dogs would curl up and use the tail to cover the face. The tail is used as well to swat insects that pester the dog.
