Downtown Development Solves Problems

By Brent Neenan

Growing up on Long Island it's easy to see why people live their whole lives here. From its beautiful beaches to its wonderful climate and nice people Long Island has everything a person could want. Unfortunately though; Long Island is being inundated with problems in this 21st century of our lord. We are experiencing massive traffic congestion, urban sprawl like never before and a lack of affordable housing. Each of these problems is manageable through downtown development. By rethinking the design and ideas of what a downtown is we can tackle these problems for future generations.

The primary issue that must be tackled is our growing traffic problems. If you've ever needed to use any of the island's highways you'd know the traffic isn't going to lighten up anytime soon. By looking at downtown development though we can find answers. If we redesign existing downtowns we can create better access to public transportation and one day reduce traffic all over the island.

The second problem that is challenging Long Island is the lack in affordable housing. 83% of all housing is constructed for as single family homes and many young islanders are being forced to relocate off the island in order to be able to afford housing. By looking at fresh downtown development again though; we can protect the islands wildlife while offering addition affordable housing. All it takes is creativity and the will to solve this problem as Build a Better Burb fully understands.

At last its urban sprawl that is killing our parks and nature. To preserve the nature we know and love on the island for our children we don't have to go any further than the Long Island downtown. When we re-imagine our downtowns to promote commercialism we can reinvigorate our local economies while saving our natural parks and wildlife.

Long Island may be heading for a couple rough years but with smart minds and out of the box thinking we can change that. Our downtowns are a gem unto themselves and by promoting them we will be promoting the lives of all of our citizenry. Before you decide to move out for greener pastures let's try to green our own pasture first.
