Having African Grey Toys Introduced To Parrots

By Jill Faulkner

Animals like parrots are territorial and happen to be suspicious of anything that is new, even if the said things are intended for fun. Therefore, you need to avoid the sudden placing of new African Grey toys inside the cage, since this could scare the bird. Some steps must be done so he could adjust to these.

A first step is to have his toy placed in one area wherein people sit and where he might be able to see it right from inside his cage. Be sure of showing him that people are really safe near the said toy and are never scared of it. Once the next day will come, put that item near his cage, but right below his typical level of perching.

This is because the birds feel so dominant over those things situated below them and are threatened by those things situated higher than them. When the next day comes, have this item hung out of the cage, right at its bottom. Wait until such time that the bird will come down to do an investigation, and this can take some time.

When you see him begin to poke at that toy through the cage, you must take the step that follows. Take the toy out to the estimated area wherein you would want to place it. Ensure that it still is situated outside his cage.

His own cage will continue providing him some security. By the time that he resumes investigation or begins playing with the item through his cage, then you need to go with the step that will come last, and that is hanging his toy in the position deemed appropriate. Your bird, by then, is accustomed to how it sounds, feels, and how it looks like, and is not anymore considered a threat.

In fact, your bird is possibly very excited for that day when the toy will be placed in his cage, where he could truly play with it. However, if the animal is seemingly frightened by that item while it is hanging out of the cage, try adding treats to it. Some treats include sunflower seeds.

The desire that he has for treats would make him go near his toy, and if he does touch it already, he begins trusting it. Also, should it happen that you are raising a bird that is young, introduce new items to it often. Such prevents him from developing a fear of those new toys. You must also utilize items made using rope deemed safe for the birds, chains, along with clips.

Those materials considered safe for animals cannot choke, trap, or maybe entangle the bird. Such items also do not have any zinc or possibly other materials considered as toxic. The said types of items which are not costly, despite being imported, are not always proven safe.

Thus, when it comes to selecting African Grey toys along with similar items, you should trust brands which are established. Know that time and effort are needed for the proper introduction of these items to your bird. However, this should not stop you if you really love your bird.
