Donating Service Dog Equipment For Americans With Disabilities

By Jill Faulkner

Now more than ever people need working pets, and one aspect of that is getting their hands on service dog equipment. There are individuals within society who suffer from a variety of disabilities who need working animals to help them be safer and more independent. It is not merely the blind who have this particular need.

We have many soldiers who have come back wounded, and they have working pets who assist them in a number of ways. Some of them experienced some degree of brain injury, and their pet protects them in public. They can help with limited sight and hearing patients, especially in an urban environment where the patient might need to cross busy intersections on a regular basis.

It is an unfortunate fact that some people will argue about whether or not a working animal is exactly that. There have even been situations where these poor creatures have been kicked by individuals who are afraid of them. Not every disability has an obvious, outward, physical manifestation; and the public really should be better educated about this fact.

Some people have even been known to kick these animals, which is not only a terrible thing to do, but the owner can press charges. These animals are trained in a very specific way, and they will usually not defend themselves. It is shameful for someone to attempt to injure such a pet out of their own fear.

For anyone who wishes to assist a wounded soldier, there are organizations which allow items to be purchased for donation to these Vets. This can include harnesses or capes and jackets that identify the animal as a working pet. Having this fact clearly displayed, along with the name of the animal, can help prevent misunderstanding and fear from people who might not be entirely comfortable around pets.

Purchasing training hours for a specific animal for a specific recipient is another way a person can help. An animal receives training very specific to the individual who is going to receive them, and these training hours can be very costly to the Vets and their families. This is one of the best ways that he public can support our troops who have been wounded in these recent wars.

Not only are Vets in need, but many autistic children receive assistance animals as well. Those who suffer from autism respond well to animals, and it becomes a way for them to communicate with the outside world. In addition, in the public school environment where bullies abound, having a big service animal beside them is an excellent deterrent to anyone who might consider bullying this disabled child.

Anyone looking for a charitable option in order to lower their tax burden next year should consider donating training hours or service dog equipment. Not only that, but educating the public, as well as schools and universities, regarding the importance of these animals is needed. Educational establishments, apartment complexes, and the TSA need to be better informed.
