Use These Tips To Teach Fido Some New Tricks

By Sally Byrd

One of the wisest things that an owner can do for their dog is training them properly. The rewards for a well-trained dog are many, both for you and your pet. A disciplined dog will give your family years of enjoyment. Read this article to find out how you can successfully train your puppy.

Avoid reinforcing negative behavior. Don't give praise or treats to your dog if it does something wrong. For example, do not pet your dog gently when they leap on you if you want them to stop the behavior.

Shock collars are not a good idea. Most of the time these don't function as they should and can cost quite a bit of money. In addition, shock collars and related devices can actually irritate your dog and eradicate current good behaviors. In general, using such techniques produces negative effects.

Have verbal cues so that your pet will know exactly when they complete a command correctly. The word "yes" can be the bridge between rewards and good behavior.

Always be patient when you train your dog. You will not get frustrated or mad and neither will your pet. Remember that dogs really want to please their owners, but they got confused because we speak a different language that they do not understand.

The more active your dog is, the healthier it will be. Dogs can become bored very easily. When dogs feel bored, they are much more stubborn when it comes to training. A dog that is happy, and gets the attention that they crave, will be a better behaved and attentive dog. Go on extended walks or runs with your dog on a regular basis.

A dog will obsess about one thing until you divert its attention. Eventually, you will be able to ensure that your dog is more focused on you and your commands than other distractions.

Don't bog your puppy down with more information than he can process. Puppies can only handle small amounts of training, so it is best to keep training to short but intense periods of time. Overdoing it could cause them to forget what was learned, and they may see the training as negative; thus, making sessions harder for you later.

Praising your pooch is an absolute must during training sessions. Acting super excited can help your dog to understand that you are happy with their behavior. Do not reward unwanted behavior. This will cause your dog to think that he is doing something good.

Make sure that you are consistent when potty training your puppy. When you're at home, spend enough time with your pet and take him out of the house every hour. If he does go to the toilet outside, praise him. Do not scold the dog if he relieves himself inside the house. In the beginning, they won't understand what they did wrong. Take your dog out soon after meals and after coming out of the crate.

When you are training your dog, try to keep your training sessions on the short side. The average dog will pay attention for about fifteen minutes and will not learn anything once it has lost interest in the exercise. After each training session spend some time playing with your dog and lavish him with praise.

During your training program, keep your dog interested by using many different types of treats. The treats should be special and should help them to realize that they are receiving a special treat for following your commands.

Be certain you are giving the right signals when your dog exhibits unacceptable behavior. If your dog does something wrong and you laugh at him or pet him, then he is likely to repeat this bad behavior indefinitely in the future. Your reaction will be confusing to your dog and extend the time it takes to reach your training goals. Never, ever let your pet feel as if bad behavior has somehow managed to amuse you in any way.

Do not allow your pet to drag you. You have to be the leader. Use a good training collar and a short leash to begin obedience training, and make sure to keep your dog at heel and to pass through doors and gates ahead of your dog. Don't forget who is in charge.

If you want to be successful at dog obedience training, you must be willing to commit to a specific amount of time on a consistent basis. Dogs learn from repetition and consistency. In addition, just spending some time with your pet daily will help convince him you are being a reliable and consistent person. Your dog needs to consider you as a leader and this will occur if you remind your dog he has to obey you everyday.

Now that the people who are interested in training their new pet dog have, hopefully, learned some new tricks, they can proceed to pass them along to their pets. Once a dog is on its way to learning, the owner will begin to appreciate the dedication that he or she has shown for doing the right thing for man's best friend.
