A Guide To Doing A Clay Tennis Court Maintenance

By Kathy Kaufman

The most common types of tennis courts would be the clay ones because these are the easiest ones to maintain and the sturdiest ones there are. Of course there are certain ways and methods to keep it fit for the players to play in. So for those who own courts, here is how to do a simple clay tennis court maintenance.

Of course the very first step would be to remove dirt and debris from the court so that it will not be dirty. In order to clean the area, one should use a special sweeper called a drag brush which was specifically made for cleaning courts. If there are any leaves or acorns that have fallen because of the trees in the area, then make sure to remove them as well.

The next thing that one should do would be to water the place by installing a sprinkler system. If one does not have a water sprinkling system, then he may just use a hose to water down the entire area which will take a bit longer. However, he should remember never to water it too much otherwise there will be puddles which will make the clay erode.

Once the watering is done, then one should roll the area with a court roller. This will help straighten the place because the clay is already soft and can be moved. Doing this will help make the field straighter and prevent having any bumps.

Now in the process of overlooking the place, one might notice that there are some holes or some small depressions in the clay that was probably caused by the heavy steps of the players. Of course these holes have to be covered up right away because keeping them there will make the area dangerous for the players to play in. Now to cover these depressions, one must know how to scarify the area.

By saying scarifying, one means that he will have to spread out the clay so that the holes will be covered. In order to do this, one should get a lute which is a special type of rake that is made out of aluminum and takes care of this kind of purpose. If the hole is too deep, then one would probably have to add some new clay before he scarifies the clay.

Regularly, one should also add some new clay on the area because over time, it will be lessened and lessened because of the scarifying. So just add some new ones and use the lute to spread it. After that, water it down in order to moisten the place and use the roller to dry off the clay.

So for those who own tennis courts, this is the way to do a tennis court maintenance. Take note that the first three methods should be performed daily to keep the place looking nice. However, the scarifying and adding of the new clay should only be done if it is needed.
