The Use Of A Window Bird Feeder To Bring Natural Elements Inside

By Debra Garrison

Nature is a beautiful thing. It can be so delightful to watch the squirrels gathering nuts and the birds flitting about. Just sitting on a bench in the park or taking a hike through the woods can show you so many beautiful things. You do not have to go outdoors to enjoy nature though. There are many ways you can enjoy the outdoors from right inside your home, and a window bird feeder is one of them.

Feeding birds has been a common pastime for many years, and for good reason. It can be such a pleasure to bring lots of different aviary creatures into your back yard. You can bring in so many different kind of fowl, depending on the type of seeds or feeders you use.

Feeds with black sunflower seeds will attract the largest variety of creatures. Virtually all seed eating birds will eat black sunflower seeds. Using a tray feeder will also open you up to attracting a wide variety of fowl.

If you want to be more specific in the types of birds you attract, you will have to use a specific kind of feeder and a specific kind of feed. You can also place around your yard many different kinds feeders so that many different kinds of birds are attracted.

If you are trying to bring in insect eating aviary creatures, such as woodpeckers, chickadees, or jays you will need to use suet. Hummingbirds eat liquid nectar and are attracted by brightly colored feed openings. Hopper feeders are good to attract sparrows, cardinals, and finches.

Using window feeders, however, can afford you an excellent view of many birds. These are held up by suctioning to the glass or hooking to the frame. Birds like the titmouse, finch, and chickadee are attracted to them.

This kind is also easier to clean since it is harder for bacteria to build up in the seed. This makes it safer for the fowl. They also prevent the issue of clear windows confusing birds and causing them to fly into them. This is a common problem when stand feeders are placed within three feet of windows.

Pets and children can be very interested in watching them as well. It is educational for children to see the birds in their natural habitat. It can even be a game for the children to research the kinds of birds they are seeing and to draw them.

Feeders in the window are also good for keeping indoor cats entertained. The cats can have the feeling of being outdoors and stalking prey, but the birds remain safe and the cats remain safely indoors. Dogs, too, can enjoy watching the birds. This can be especially exciting for dogs if you use a tray feeder, which may attract squirrels.

Both a stand feeder and a window bird feeder are good options. Make sure, though, that whatever option you choose you do not feed the birds over the winter. It may seem like it is helpful to the birds, but it is actually disruptive to their natural migration patterns and can harm them in the long run.
