Traffic Safety Near Your Home

By Jessie Mccafferty

The most evident benefit of slowing down traffic in your area is pedestrian safety. Even slowing the flow of cars by 5 miles per hour can make a huge difference in the number and severity of accidents. But beyond pedestrian safety, there are many benefits that some HOAs and local law enforcement agencies probably may not be thinking about when making an attempt to determine how best to handle traffic problems.

A traffic control device with driver feedback improves the safeness of the neighborhoods where they are used. This might seem obvious, but the safety enhancements essentially go well beyond traffic safety.

The crime rate is typically lower in neighborhoods that use these devices than those that don't. While some areas with speed bumps could have reduced crime because they make it more difficult for a car to speed out of the area, speed bumps aren't highly recommended. They also slow emergency automobiles and come with other heavy drawbacks.

Driver feedback signs can also help reduce crime in a neighborhood. The slower, steadier traffic flow can actually impede somebody making an attempt to race away from a crime. The feedback offered by the signs can also deter bad guys from coming into the area. Since the signs reflect each driver's speed back at them, a criminal might feel really vulnerable.

Many people also may think the signs are recording speeds and that there could be a camera taking pictures of cars for ticketing by mail. This can lead criminals to believe an area is too well-monitored, deterring them from committing crimes in that area.

Other benefits of traffic control techniques include things that come from better traffic flow. When traffic moves smoothly, there are much fewer delays and deadlocks. That implies fewer autos idling in the street. Pollution and noise typically drop, making the area more pleasant to be in, especially out of doors.
