How to Have a Safe Halloween

By Mark Mahaffey

The holiday season is upon us in full force: Halloween is just around the corner. This is a time that many people look forward to because they love the costumes, rich food and good times that are waiting to be had with family and friends. But beware: Halloween can be a dangerous time as well fun.

The problem is that some see Halloween as an opportunity to engage in crime such as the destruction of property belonging to others and even harming people. They may end up drunk from too much partying or they may do their dirty work while in their right minds! But even if criminals do not strike, accidents can still happen.

However, you will be glad to learn that with some careful planning and strategizing, you can do a lot to reduce the risk of anything bad happening this Halloween. If you are willing to invest some time and energy, you can have a safe and happy Halloween.

One of the most important things you can do is to make sure while you are out and about trick or treating or walking along streets is to wear clothing that is visible. If it is dark outside, drivers will have a hard time seeing you if you are not dressed in clothing that can be seen. Wear light colored clothing or put reflective tape on your costume so you will be easily seen. This can keep you from being hit by a car.

It is also a good idea to only go trick or treating at the homes of people whom you personally know. This is because strangers may sometimes try to harm you by violence or even by passing out poisoned candy. You avoid a lot of trouble if you just stay away from the houses of strangers.

Will you be opening your home to trick or treaters? If so, you need to exercise cautions as well. It can be dangerous to open your door to people about whom you know nothing. Be extremely careful when interacting with them.
