Unemployment Analysis for Arizona for May 2012

By Kurt Allan

The State of Arizona's unemployment rate for May 2012 remained static at 8.2%. The May rate continues a 2012 trend of no monthly percentage increases for the year. Even though the rate remained the same, however, the actual number of unemployed people in AZ increased for the month (by roughly 1,000) as did the number of those employed and the number in the civilian workforce for the state.

Compared to May 2012, the current 8.2% May 2012 rate is dramatically lower than the 2011 rate of 9.6%. In real terms, the 1.4% unemployment rate improvement means almost 44,000 less people unemployed in the state. Additionally the number of employed workers in Arizona from May 2011 to May 2012 has increased by over 23,000, as well as the civilian workforce has decreased by approximately 20,000. The net effect of all these changes results in the big improvement in Arizona's year-over-year unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate for the nation as a whole in May 2012 matches Arizona at 8.2%. The one (small) difference, however, is while Arizona's rate stayed unchanged from May 2012 the U.S. average ticked up slightly (0.1%) for May.

Arizona's business sectors that experienced positive employment numbers for May 2012 included Construction, Professional and Business Services, Mining & Logging, Financial Activities, and Manufacturing. Additionally, some sectors's employment numbers decreased including Leisure & Hospitality, Other Services, and Information.

All of the Arizona cities that the U.S Department of Labor reporting results on show higher unemployment rates for may 2012. While the States of Utah (6.0%), New Mexico (6.7%) and Colorado (8.1%) all have lower rates that Arizona for May.
