Sustainable Plumbing Tips

By Joanne Henderson

The green movement is huge right now. And, since 2012 saw one of the driest summers since the 1940s, the pressure is on to reduce the amount of water we use every day in our home or office. There are many ways to reduce your overall water usage and save money in the process. The following article discusses some of the biggest waste offenders and how you can easily make an impact in the amount of water used.

The type of toilet you use at your work or business can make a huge impact on water waste. It can be so dramatic that the Alliance for Water Efficiency reports a potential waste of 30% or more just from flushing your toilet. "To help reduce the amount of waste you should evaluate the use of a higher efficiency toilet model," advises Dave Paulson, a Hackensack Plumber. Newer model toilets not only conserve water but also do a better job of cleaning than older models often using less than a gallon of water at a time.

Your sink and faucet are another consideration when keeping your home or business green. Nearly 16% of water consumed daily will be from your sink and sink faucets which include your bathrooms and kitchen. Leaky faucets can account for a tremendous amount of water waste in addition to causing damage to your home or office and should be dealt with as soon as possible. A simple solution to further reduce waste is to have an aerator installed. In fact, this can help save you save a gallon or more every few minutes during heavy water usage.

At home, your shower and bathtub also waste a lot of water - up to 17% of your daily usage. The reason for this can be from the type of shower head you use in the shower, to running excess water for long showers. Aside from cutting down the time you take in the shower, you can also get a high efficiency shower head. Avoid "fancy" shower heads, such as ones that create a rain-type water stream. While these are tempting, they are not friendly to the environment because they can use between 76 and 100 gallons of water during your shower, depending on the length. Shower heads are easy to install yourself and your local plumber can give you advice on the best one to purchase.

Additional sustainable plumbing tips will also help you to save water helping you have a greener home or business, as well as saving money. When doing things such as brushing your teeth, wiping off kitchen counters, or washing vegetables, don't leave the water running on a constant basis. You should also consider watering your lawn less frequently, especially during seasons where rain is plentiful in your neighborhood. If you're expecting rain, turn off your sprinklers to save water.
