Security Tips for Staying Safe at Night

By Mark Mahaffey

The dark hours of night are some of the most frightening for some people. Nighttime is when many criminals prefer to do their work. This is likely because people are asleep and less aware of what is happening. But also, they like to work under the cover of darkness-it lessens the chances that they will be seen and caught.

If the nighttime hours are scary for you because of the increased risk of crime, you are not alone. The good news is that you can take some very practical steps toward increasing your safety and security at night. It takes some planning and preparation, but the peace of mind that these measures bring you will make them worth any time or money you invest in them.

A home alarm system should be one of the first investments that you make in your home security. A home alarm system can be set to alert you if anyone attempts to open a door or window on your home. Even if you are asleep, the alert will still be useful, because you can turn it up loudly enough to wake you up.

Another smart thing to do is to install motion detectors both inside and outside your home. Outdoor motion detectors can be programmed to turn lights and sirens on if someone steps into the area that you are monitoring. Indoor motion detectors can be programmed to do the same thing. With these in place, you never have to wonder if someone is prowling around.

Good lighting is also important. Criminals do not like to be noticed, so they will often choose homes that are dark to burglarize. You can make your home less attractive to them by bathing your home in security lights. Train lights both on the exterior of your home and on the yard and driveway areas surrounding it.

Also, consider getting a dog. It may sound simple, but burglars hate barking dogs. Not only do the dogs alert homeowners of the presence of the burglars, but they also pose a danger to the burglar-they might bite!
