By Carol Edwards

Pet owners are a special breed, and are very well known for spending lots of money to ensure their pets have a wonderful life. Dog onesies could be looked at as an impractical expense considering most have a furry coat, but there are a lot of good reasons that they are very popular! They can certainly make a fashion statement, but they have a practical uses as well, especially in area that are colder in the winter.

A onesie is a one piece outfit that covers the entire torso. Some have long sleeves and some short, and when it comes to canines, they most often have open feet so that the paws are exposed. This is often because they are meant for the animal to wear them when the weather outdoors is cooler, but leaving the paws exposed keeps the material from becoming soiled, wet, or from wearing through. They are often made this way to help the animal maintain grip and balance, especially in climates where sidewalks and roads can become slippery because of ice or snow.

For the sake of convenience, often the area where the animal would need to void is left open. This allows the animal to urinate or defecate without removing the piece of clothing. Also for the reason of convenience, many onesies are fastened with snaps or buttons instead of a zipper, which might get tangled in the fur and cause discomfort to the animal. Generally, the tail area is also left open so as not to restrict happy wagging!

Made of many types of material, there is certainly a garment for any occasion. A quick search will turn up all kinds of patterns that can be used to sew, knit or crochet an outfit for a canine of any size. There are also many online shops and brick and mortar pet stores that carry an abundance of styles.

Whether the dog has short fur or has their coat groomed to a shorter length, a onesie can help to keep them cosy when the weather is cold. It offers a warm layer, and can help keep any dog feel comfortable even when the temperature drops.

Of course, sometimes a fashion statement what the outfit is all about. With such popularity, it is certainly easy to find something that works for any taste or occasion. From simple to very detailed, light to heavyweight, there is no end to the options.

Not only for small or short haired breeds, these garments can also be worn by large dogs. They are especially good for breeds that might benefit from an extra layer of warmth like a greyhound. Any dog who is outside when the weather is cold can certainly benefit from wearing one as it can help to provide a layer of insulation and to keep the dog warm if their coat is not thick or warm enough. It is especially good for dogs that have a flat laying coat.

Dressing up your dog has never been easier. Whether for fun, fashion or warmth, there are such an array of colours, styles and materials available there is definitely something for every size, shape and breed, no matter the weather!
