Tips For Picking The Right Buckle Dog Collars For The Canine In Your Life

By Ronald Hall

One of the things that many dog owners love to do is to purchase accessories and toys for their prized canines. While it can be fun to lavish them with toys and other items, there are other items that are equally important for a canine's safety. Buckle dog collars and other items that help keep dogs from running off or getting out of control should be high on the list of items for any pet parent to buy. Here are some tips that you can use to make shopping for, and purchasing, these items much easier to do.

In the past, the selection of these items was quite limited to a few different sizes, materials and styles. Now, however, there are a wide range of options available. While this can make it easier to find a choice that you like it may make it seem overwhelming as you may worry that you are not making the best decision for your lifestyle or your pet.

One of the first things to consider is whether you will be using the item to control your dog or whether it will be more decorative. In the past, it was not uncommon for individuals to use a collar to control their dog but now many more people are using harnesses or other devices to make sure their dogs cannot run away when they are out for a walk. If you will be using it to keep control of your pet, you may want to look for a collar that is made of durable materials such as leather or webbing.

You should also consider the size of your dog as well. This will not only tell you how large a neck the collar will need to fit around, it will also help you decide how wide you want to go as well. If you are not sure of the size you need, it may be worthwhile to measure your canine's neck in order to find out how large a size you will require.

Some materials are better for certain activities than others. If you are using your dog for hunting or it will be going in the water on a regular basis, choosing a material that will not rot when it gets wet is a good idea. Some materials have anti microbial properties that will help reduce odor and make it less likely to irritate the dog's skin.

You need to make sure that any model you choose is durable enough to stand up to pulling and jerking. Some may not have stitching that will stand up to much wear and tear. Others may not have a ring that you can use to attach a leash or chain. You should look for well made buckles and rings that will not split or open if they are pulled on.

Finding options to choose from is not difficult. There are many pet specialty stores for you to look at and many of these have websites that you can use to shop and to compare sizes. You may also be able to find collars at hardware stores and department stores as well although you may not be able to find as good a selection there.

Taking the time to pick the right collar can be time well spent. That way you can make sure your pet is comfortable and safe as well as looking the way you have always wanted it to.
