How To Choose The Perfect Contemporary Area Rug

By Eugenia Dickerson

Choosing the perfect contemporary area rug for a room in your home can sometimes be a daunting task. With all the what seems like an unlimited amount of different types, colors and styles pining down the best one can be hard. Sometimes the best thing to do is take your time and follow some basic steps to help choose what rug is the best one for the space you have in mind.

One of the primary steps is to first decide what the color is best for the rug. This may appear like something easy, but involves much more than just getting a matching color. It is typically a good plan to find contrasting tones and shades so it can bond with and pull together other elements of any room it is in. In a few cases rugs with a pattern work surprisingly well for this too.

The basic design is also an critical aspect. It is generally an extension of the home owner's ideas and personality traits. More conservative rugs are often put in formal areas and more flamboyant rugs are put in leisure areas. Geometric patterns typically are used in modern areas. Most people like floral colors or patterns in more domestic areas like kitchen or hallways.

Something many people often forget to consider is the different effects the rug's texture can have. This is what can really add warmth to a room based on how it feels. Wool rugs with large louse piles are often warm and inviting, while the same rug with small tight piles will not be.

The materials which are used to craft them are generally divided into 2 different categories. They are basically natural and man made. Simple Wool is typically one of the most used of the natural fibers. It is quite strong, dyes well and is very durable. Another natural fiber which has gained increasingly widespread use is cotton. It has properties very close to wool fibers and it can also be washed or dried far easier.

An example of man made fibers companies use are polypropylene and nylon. These man made fibers are inexpensive to make and use. They are also easier to clean than natural fibers are. Several critics believe they lack a natural warmth natural fibers possess. They are not as eco-friendly to make as a natural fiber. Some companies have been successful blending man made and natural and man made fibers for their rugs.

Two factors that are often tied together are size and quality. Generally the larger they are the more the quality goes down. Though larger more expensive rugs can be great quality. It is important not to overwhelm the area it will be going into. Generally smaller is always better.

Patterned rugs are usually great for hiding small stains. Buying your quality contemporary area rug will typically cost you a little more capital so try getting the best one that fits your budget. Sometimes buying one a little bit smaller will save you enough money that you can get a far better quality item.
