Steps For Underground Propane Tank Installation

By Amanda Baird

It is important that the right steps for underground propane tank installation are followed. This is because there are certain problems which are encountered with them. There are accepted standards for installations and the required spacing. The person installing it therefore must be trained and must be equipped with the necessary skills and competency.

The first step therefore is to get a qualified individual for the installations. The propane company will send their representative to inspect the area and to ascertain that the place is conducive for the installations. The representative will also ascertain that the requirements are met. For instance, the drainage is proper and the pressure relief valves are up to standard.

This is a type of installations where the whole container is fully immersed in the ground. There is no part which is left above the ground surface. There is also a second one know as mounded underground system. This system involves a situation where the container is partially buried. The other third system is known as exposed underground system. This is a system where from the middle part to the bottom part is fully immersed underground while from the middle part to the top part is left above the ground. All these systems of installations have different procedure and conditions to be certified.

The bottom part is covered under ground while the top part is not covered. One must ensure that proper precaution is taken in to consideration while transporting the container as well as while lowering it to the ground. Scratching of the container must be avoided at all cost.

It begins from the process of transportation of the tank from the manufacture to the intended place. During the transportation, it must be covered by a carpet or any other suitable material to prevent it from being scratched. The same protection should also be used when lowering it to the ground.

It is also necessary to take some precautions with regard to the area where the container is being installed. If the ground is having rocks, after being excavated, it is important to cover the ground with sand first. This sand will protect it from sharp objects such as edges of the rock.

If one fails to provide proper protection, the container may corrode faster, hence encouraging leakages and weakening the tank walls as well. While excavating the ground where the container will be laid, the person responsible for the installation must ensure that the level ground where the tank will be placed is free from rocks or any sharp object. If the place is rocky, it is advisable that 6-inch bed of sand is used before the container is placed. The place should also be dug to a proper depth which will ensure that it is fully immersed in the ground even after filling the ground with sand.

Places which are prone to high ground water level, you must ensure that the ground where the tank is installed is adequately secured in order to prevent it from floating. This can be done by using a concrete slab. If the area is subject to vehicular movements such as vehicles and trucks, it is also important that the container is protected from the weight. This can be achieved by putting the container in a dipper ground. These above steps are necessary for underground propane tank installation
