Doing Good In The World: Rotary International

By Ronald I B Ibettson

Rotary International is a service organization that is aimed at bringing together professional and commercial leaders with the goal of fostering better relationships and supporting the health and growth of the greater community. Those who join this club are held to a strict standard, given that the duty of serving others takes precedence over serving the self. This is a secular organization and thus, it does not discriminate on the basis of religion, race, age or gender.

One can contact a Rotary club to inquire about membership but can only join a Rotary club only if invited. Currently, however, all interested parties with something of value to contribute can apply for membership. Rotary is a non-partisan, non-sectarian organization. It is open to business and professional leaders aged 18 and upwards, with no regard to economic status.

There are currently more than 1.2 million Rotarian's across the world. People who are a part of these clubs frequently attend social functions, which are typically held on a weekly basis. These are usually simple lunches, dinners or breakfast meetings at which activities and goals for the club are reviewed. These events can take place in public venues but they are more commonly held at lodges. Rotarian's offer scholarships and exchanges, programs to promote literacy and many other activities and resources for enriching the community.

High ethical standards are valued and promoted in business and all professional endeavors. Members recognize this as being away to further promote peace and health. They also value professions that supply worthiness to others.

The promotion of increased international understanding is another way in which Rotarian's remain service driven. They do this by encouraging professional throughout their world chapters to network with one another. These individuals are united by the same ideal service.

Evanston, Illinois is home to the Rotary International headquarters. This group was found in 1905 and presently has numerous branches in various countries across the globe and many official languages. The club founder was Paul P. Harris.
