The Vision And Mission Of The American Kennel Club

By Christine Wallace

There are many pros in opting to own purebred dogs, compared to the mixed counterparts. Dog fanciers all around may prefer one breed over another, may it be for its looks or some such characteristics. In order to standardize and streamline the recognition of pedigreed dogs, canine councils such as the American Kennel Club were formed.

Despite where other dog lovers stand on the topic, there are intuitively many advantages with so called purebred dogs. For instance, they have predictable physical traits. That will be useful if one is after a pet of a specific approximate size and looks. Also, they tend to have predictable temperaments and behaviors since they were tempered and bred over centuries.

This not for profit council is essentially a registry of recognized pedigreed dogs, founded in the nineteenth century. Different kennel clubs are existent all over the world, distinct in each country. The AKC is the established standard in America, but its saying something that it is also used as a means of reference for kennel councils the whole world over.

In 1884, it was contrived by dog fanciers who wanted to advocate the purebred dog as a family companion. They also wanted to promote the health and well being of these pets and establish grounds for responsible ownership. Most particularly, they meant to record, maintain, and set conformation rules for certain breeds so as to standardize them.

As of this moment, the AKC recognizes one hundred and ninety two breeds. Each pedigree possesses ideal physical traits and temperaments, called a breed standard, which are then jotted down in a studbook. A certain purebred has to be bred consistently over the generations, so one of the requirements is that a dog has to have known parentage.

Seven divisions are set for the AKCs divisions. Theres the hound, sporting, terrier, working, herding, non sporting, and toy groups. As a plus, miscellaneous or foundation stocks are also included, which are still mooted over for consideration by the panel of the council. If they pass, they will be admitted and classified under one of the seven groups.

The AKC bills itself as the recognized and most trusted expert in training, breed, and health information for domestic canines. As per its mission statement, it aims to help produce good dogs, of sound mind and body. It is indeed a considerable council, with more than five thousand licensed clubs and organizations subsumed within it. Through these clubs, it can sponsor up to tens of thousands of events each year and consequently receive millions of participation entries.

It has many activities, as in issuing Canine Good Citizen certifications, which guarantees that your pooch is well conducive for living at home and appearing in public. There is a health foundation, which undertakes millions of dollars worth of research to study the common diseases of dogs, such as cancer, hip dysplasia, retinal atrophies, allergies, et cetera. Novelties include a rescue network and a reunite program. And for auxiliaries, you can visit the Museum of the Dog and a library, which are respectively the largest and most comprehensive collection of canine art and books.

This kennel club is driven by its core values, which include the love of purebred dogs. It is also well set in maintaining the integrity of its registry, in that it doesnt compromise on its codes and standards. The AKC is committed to the interests of both dogs and their owners, and coordinates the well being of both. All in all, a good campaign for such good companions.
