The Role Of A Dog Diaper And How It Should Be Used

By James Hamilton

Diapers are most associated with young children. However, at times, dogs may need to wear diapers. A dog diaper is specifically designed to be worn by dogs. You may wonder why your pet may ever need a diaper, but there are many reasons why it could need one.

Urinary incontinence is one of the reasons why dogs can wear diapers. Urinating involuntarily is not a behavioral problem. It is caused by various factors like bladder issues, a weak urinary sphincter muscle, diabetes and a urinary tract infection. Even properly trained dogs can experience urinary incontinence. It is advisable to seek the assistance of a veterinary doctor if your pet is suffering from urinary incontinence. Veterinarians can use drugs and surgery to treat this problem. Nevertheless, when other methods fail to control this condition, you will have to buy diapers for your pet.

Elderly dogs may be unable to control some bodily functions like defecation and urination. This may occur when the companion animals simply forget what they have learned. Dogs older than eleven can suffer from canine cognitive dysfunction, which is similar to Alzheimers disease. It is possible to treat this disease using certain drugs, but you may still find it necessary to use pet diapers.

Pet owners can also use diapers when the female dogs are in heat. The diapers will help keep the house and furnishings cleaner. They will prevent the dogs from licking their genital area.

It is also advisable to use diapers if you are house training your dog. Nevertheless, it is important to have the well-being of your pet in your mind instead of being concerned about the furniture and carpets only. Therefore, even if you choose to house train your pet, it is still vital to take your companion outside on a regular basis without a diaper and show it where it should relieve itself.

There are cloth and disposable pet diapers on the market. Therefore, pet owners debate about which type is most suitable. Cloth diapers are environmentally friendly since it is possible to wash and reuse them. However, you may dislike having to wash soiled canine diapers. Furthermore, the initial cost for these products is higher than that of the disposable ones. In contrast, disposable diapers are easy and convenient to use, but they usually end up in landfills. Their cost also adds up over time.

Diapers for dogs have variations in absorbency and fit. Therefore, it is vital to follow the product instructions for measuring and select the right absorption level. You should also change the diapers frequently. Do not let your pet be uncomfortable in a full or wet diaper. Soiled diapers can also cause diaper rash in dogs. The dogs may then experience itching, burning, inflammation and bacterial infections.

When changing the canine diapers, it is advisable to use baby wipes. Wearing gloves is also advisable to avoiding coming into contact with fecal matter and urine. These diapers have a hole where the tail of the dog is supposed to go through. Therefore, if your dog does not have a tail, cover the hole on the canine diaper before you use it to prevent leakage.
