Luminaries Lights Provide Glimmering Sparkle

By Diane Ellis

Decorating is one of the most effective ways to bring a certain type of flair to any party, holiday or event. The things that are chosen to embellish the walls, tables, yards and more are what set the mood and enhance the experience of all who behold it. Using luminaries lights to adorn a space can add a touch of magic and adventure.

The most common use for this type of product is to light a walkway or porch with a soft glow. They are just as effective at adding a decorative appeal to mantles, holiday settings and tables or giving a party space a warm light. Versatility is part of what makes them so useful since they can be eerie, whimsical, festive, romantic or reverent all dependent on their casing and location.

Vellum or paper bags, both printed and plain, are among the more preferred casing for this type of item. Die cut designs are popular and may either be on the products surface or on an insert that goes inside of the solid one. They got their start as an easy crafting project and are now so well liked that they are mass manufactured for sale.

To prevent the items from blowing away in the wind or becoming easily toppled, sand is usually poured into the bottom to add a bit of weight. It serves a dual purpose as a precaution against fire when using actual candles to provide the illumination. Multiple lighting options are available, designed for purpose and convenience, and to meet the preferences of a variety of individuals.

Votive or tealight candles are the traditional lighting source for this kind of decor. They generate a dancing flicker that most people find warm and very welcoming. When the products feature print or die cut designs, the flame creates a shadowy silhouette that can attract and mesmerize, giving the place a unique appeal.

An oil lamp type of lighting source can provide a somewhat brighter illumination. Generally, they are small jars that hold only a few ounces of fuel that is meant to burn for a particular amount of time, capped with a metal lid through which a saturated wick extends. Their flame tends to be stronger and higher and as a precaution, should not be left unsupervised.

If one desires an alternative to using open flames, battery operated LED products are available. They come in many different styles including those that resemble tealight candles, multi-colored bulbs housed within a round disc, and rectangular boxes with as many as eight diodes. A lot of the designs have the option of either burning steady or flickering like fire.

A more advanced design of LED unit is a somewhat larger box that is battery operated and features multiple bulbs. These are quite a bit heavier than all of the other types so no sand it required to keep the bag in place. Certain models also have the option to be connected to by cords to several others to draw their power from electricity and to operate as a single string.
