The Growth Of Field Trial Over The Years

By Greg Poole

Every person must have at one point or another come across an advertisement for field tests. Most of them however wonder if their dogs are qualified for these competitions because there are a number of different kinds. Most of the huge championships take place at Ames plantation and many people say that this place is very good for spending family time. The types of dogs that participate in the field trial are called the hunting dogs.

Before dogs are allowed to contest in the championships, there are various breeding features that are normally applied on them to make them qualified for the tests. The trainers normally test some characteristics in them before letting them compete as hunting dogs. Dogs that are affirmed as the best are normally given this title because of their performance on the trials. Nonetheless, many individuals think that some hunting dogs just get to be the finest because their breeds are the most prevailing which gives them good odds.

For example, the number of Labradors that usually compete in any trial is usually larger than that of any other breed. Does this mean that the Labradors are really that dominant or they just have an advantage because of the large numbers? However, it is more realistic to say that popularity of a certain dog is brought about by its success and not the number of its kind that participated in the field test.

Every year on the month of February, there is usually two weeks set aside for the biggest field competition around the continent. In this event the finest setters and pointers are gathered at this historic event by their owners in the Ames plantation. It is the national championship for field testing bird dogs and all states are usually allowed to participate.

This competition is usually so hard since only the finest dogs compete. For one to be eligible they should have at least attained first position in two of the qualifying competitions that are normally set before the main contest. Those who have participated before are however permitted to join with at least second or third place in the qualifiers.

The judges usually look at the stamina shown by the dogs during the hunting and also how many birds they manage to capture. There is also a test for endurance and the manner in which they handle the hunts. For example, the judges will check if the dogs point with style during the actual hunting.

An example of the most competent dogs in these championships is the Shadow Oak Bo. This is a male setter and it has managed to win twice in one hundred years of the event. Only two types of dogs have managed this, the only other one being the Red Water Rex. In the 2014 Ames plantation championships, this dog made history by winning after 43 years of waiting for a setter. Many say that it is the best dog to have ever participated in the championships.

Many participants can attest that this is one of the greatest sports across the world. It is not all about the owners, but the dogs themselves. The judges at this event are very good at their job and they make sure they give each dog the points they deserve for the 180 minutes they spend on the spotlight.
