By Mitchelle Smith

Are you a parent? If you have a small child, baby skin care techniques should be something you know something about. Once you are educated about your baby's skin, and what can adversely affect it, you will handle things like diaper rash much more easily. It is easy to learn about baby skin care issues. There are some simple steps that you can take, plus you can always go to a pediatrician if you need more advice.

You can avoid chapped skin on your baby by applying a baby type moisturizer, and this will keep their skin smooth and elastic. It is essential that you moisturize your baby's skin whenever you are planning a trip out and about and also as soon as he or she has been bathed. Sometimes the weather can impose unfavorable conditions and your baby will need to be shielded from this. After bathing your baby, you should pat him or her dry with a towel, being careful not to rub. Then apply a moisturizer over the baby's damp skin so chapping doesn't occur. You will be giving your baby a better moisturizer when you opt for the pure and untreated varieties. Be ready to purchase more than one moisturizer before you come across the particular one that will be perfect for your baby's skin.

If you are serious about preventing skin problems, you need to keep your baby's clothing and bedding as clean as you can. The best thing that you can do is wash anything that might come into contact with your baby's skin, even before it gets worn. Fragrance free and dye free detergents are best. Harder chemicals are capable of causing both allergic reactions and irritations so you need to avoid them. Keeping blankets, pillow covers and clothing clean helps to avoid problems such as dust mites and any dirt or debris that could cause problems. You shouldn't wash your baby's clothing or bedding with the clothes and bedding of the rest of your family. If you want to keep your baby's skin as healthy as you can, it is basic precautionary measures like these that can be helpful.

Bathing your children excessively is a problem that many parents must overcome. By bathing them to frequently, you remove natural oils that can help your baby how fresh and soft skin. You might have to deal with your baby having dry skin or eczema because you are bathing them too frequently. You really should bathe your newborn more than two times a week at most. You should gently clean your baby, especially around the face, but a daily bath isn't necessary.

Some parents will notice a red patch on their baby's head and wonder where it came from. This is a condition named cradle cap and it is a common occurrence during the first few months of a baby's life. Sometimes it can be crusty and once in a while it can appear yellowish. This is caused by an over production of oil in the baby's glands--it is kind of like when an adult gets dandruff. This is not a serious condition and will usually clear up all by itself. Rubbing an almond oil or olive oil on your baby's head can help clear it up more quickly. Sometimes the condition will become more severe and that is when your doctor might need to prescribe a medicated ointment or shampoo. Baby skin care is something all parents should be concerned with, as infants have thin and fragile skin. A newborn baby's skin is particularly sensitive so you need to make sure to follow any advice given to you by your doctor as well as keeping the guidelines in mind. Obviously you will want your baby to be as healthy as humanly possible but you also need to remember that developing skin conditions is common and most of the time they are going to go away all by themselves.
