Some Data Center Flooring Basics

By Maryanne Goff

The surge in information technology and its implications across industries is nothing short of a revolution. Not only does this revolution bring about smoother functions and process, it also results in the creation of greater job opportunities. These changes bring about the need for better processing units, and the rise of data centers. In this context, it becomes essential to ensure that data center flooring is adequate to take care of the various services that may be offered by the unit.

To begin with, the business has to take into account the scale of operations it intends to commence operations with, along with, as far as possible, the scaling up it foresees in the near future. This will adequately help determine the size of the premises to be taken up as well as space to be occupied.

Apart from the human resource assessment, something more crucial to the calculations is the equipment count. The number and volume of machinery to be placed in the premises is what would actually help assimilate the capacity or space required.

Some of the basic requirements of proper floor layout also include infrastructural concerns such as power, water pipes, gas pipes, sewage systems and information storage facilities. These are essential considerations during setup of such premises. Another crucial consideration is an efficient cooling mechanism. Since such large amounts of data shall be stored in such heavy machinery, it is essential to ensure adequate temperature levels are maintained, as these machines are bound to generate quite a lot of heat. This calls for efficient cooling systems to be installed in the building.

Another method of ensuring efficient cooling is underground or cooling below the floors. This makes the air get evenly distributed without wires and apparatus showing above the ground. Better circulation of air and smoother functioning of equipment is eventually the result.

Such high costs on infrastructure obviously require high levels of security as well. A center such as this, therefore, also needs a fool proof security system and properly trained staff. It goes without saying that the work environment must be in compliance with the necessary norms and suitable to the standard of information and resources employed.

The construction or finalization such a unit also entails taking into consideration the possibility and scale of expansion in at least the near future. With data centers increasingly in demand for storage capacity and safety, the need to increase operations of each such premise is universally only growing. The space must, therefore, be such that easy expansion can be made.

The kind and quality of the flooring is something that absolutely must not be neglected. Some of the factors to be taken into consideration here include the design and quality of fixtures to be installed and the provision for their easy installation and removal.

The safety and security of high end data units is absolutely essential to ensure sustainable models. This can be achieved with suitable data center flooring plans and their implementation. Whether being built from scratch or being renovated, these structures have to be designed keeping the long term in mind. This is likely to result in good investment and sound preservation of knowledge too.
