Could City Bikes Work in a Kart-Style Racing Game?

By Rob Sutter

I think I'm all gamed out as far as kart racing titles are concerned. It's not that they're bad by any stretch of the imagination - I'll still play them with others - but the truth of the matter is that I feel like they're overdone. What about games which involve biking in some way? The possibility of city bikes being used in a game where kart-style racing is implemented is an idea that could definitely work but only if the developers behind it put forth their best efforts.

If you look at such games as the "Mario Kart" series, you will see that racing is only one of the many elements utilized. It's the skeleton of these games, in essence, but it's accompanied by many other factors will enhances the level of enjoyment. Items which people can use to throw off their opponents and the ability to pull off tricks while in mid-air are two of the many features one can speak of. If karts can perform these actions so well, who is to say that biking would be any different?

City bikes should not be any different because they are more versatile on land. They can be maneuvered with much more ease and while they may not have motors or propellers helping them along, unadulterated speed only makes the experience that much more natural, since only the strongest riders will be recognized. On the subject of city bikes, such rides can be found through companies like Linus, which work to supply people with everything related to cycling, accessories and all.

I could see the escapades taking place in my head now as I type. I can envision shells being used to cause bikers to spin out of control or perhaps take a spill which knocks them out of first place so that others can pass by. Also, there could be sections where riders must take a leap of faith, making it the perfect opportunity to show off with tricks. Getting to the finish line is most important but sometimes the way you get there is just as important as reaching it in the end regardless.

While there have been many games involving bicycles, they seemed to have decreased in number over the course of time. I can't imagine why because I feel like a creative developer would be able to implement them in ways that would be enjoyable. Racing may just be the ideal genre to look at because I don't feel as though they'd be better suited anywhere else. Kart-style racing games have been successful, so why not switch up the vehicles this time around?
