How To Know What Is Involved In Foster Care WA

By Brenda Robinson

A foster child needs to be looked after properly, as the name implies in order to get the best out of life. Some kids would have remembered what they have been exposed to. Other kids will be too young, but it is in the subconscious. They will have a lot of questions. Foster care WA is the next step until the youngster is able to find a home.

It should be a pleasant experience for them as they wait for a family. In some cases, they won't find a family who will adopt them. There are half of the children in foster care who will find homes. The first thing you have to ask yourself as a foster parent is why you want to be in this situation. It may be that you have a calling.

However, these days, the social workers has learned to be a lot more careful about finding the right environment. This is based on references which give them more of an idea of who the family are and why they want to take on a project like this. It is not a process that happens overnight. The family needs to go through a training process along with interviews and questionnaires.

The foster parent will need training in order to explain to the child why they are going to have to cope in this fashion. It could be that their parent is ill or sick or they are working elsewhere. Sometimes, it is not safe for the youngster and they need to understand. Often, the best way of understanding this is by processing it on your own.

After all, the word foster means to take care, nurture and to grow and develop, so this is what the family should be focusing on. It is not always people who are willing to do this because they feel it is a calling, for example. Sometimes, it is because people want to do it, such as with family members. This can be a good option because they may decide to stay on permanently.

It is not easy to explain to the children why they have been moved to these types of circumstances. This forms part of the training. Some kids will be told that their parent is sick or hurt. They may be told that their home is not safe or that they are not able to stay there because they are not being looked after in the right way.

It is not easy for them to take this in at first. They may be emotional about this or respond in other ways. Sometimes, counseling is necessary. The foster parent needs to spend time with the child, even though they may have trouble coping with these outbursts. They should encourage them to do something with their hands. This is often the best type of therapy.

This can include drawing or painting. A lot of kids get a lot out of drawing more about themselves and their present situation. This often happens in art therapy and there is a lot that can come out of the process whereby they will express their emotions in a non-verbal way. This is what children prefer because they often have trust issues.
