The word doula originates from ancient Greek and is translated to mean servant or handmaiden. Labor doulas are also referred to as birth doulas and are women who are trained to provide emotional and practical support to women and their families during birth. Some one week after birth, the doula visits the mother to determine the need for any additional care.

There is no requirement that a doula should be certified. There are however some organizations which provide them with certification. The type of certification will depend on length of training and rigor. In hiring doulas, you need to find out the level of experience and how suitable they are for you.

The charges for services offered need careful consideration. Most therapists charge by the hour with others charging a flat fee. In some cases, part of the fee is covered by insurance.
