The Different Steps In Dealing With A Recently Deceased Pet

By Jerry Hughes

When humans started to domesticate different animals, they did so with the intention of making their lives easier. This was because they usually did so to have an animal guarding their property overnight, used them for hunting and farming purposes, or as guides to help with certain disabilities. However, as time went on, these two life forms learned to coexist and formulate relationships between each other.

Following this logic, it is highly understandable for owners to feel saddened by the death of their beloved animal. Often times, these animals are treated as members of the family, so when they begin to lose their health or dies in an unfortunate accident, it can be hard on the people who have taken care of them for a while. Found below are some tips in how to deal with a Recently Deceased Pet.

Whether your pet has fallen extremely ill or has become weak because of their age, you are usually able to tell when they are about to die. Their health usually deteriorates, and they start to lose energy quickly, or may even refuse to eat their meals and drink water. At this point, you need to begin preparing them, as well as yourself with their eventual passing.

Take note, they will not be around in your life much longer, which means you should find the energy to be around them as much as you are able to. Do some fun activities that you think they might enjoy, or prepare a meal for them that they love. Use the available time you have left to create new memories and use it as a chance to make them happy in exchange for all the happiness they have given you.

When spending some hours together or engaging in activities, make sure to take some pictures together. This will serve as a remembrance of your pet, and give you the chance to reminisce upon good times spent with them before their passing. Most often, people will have these pictures framed or printed out and displayed in their homes.

Sometimes when an animal is suffering highly from an illness or due to old age, most veterinarians will suggest giving them an earlier death through euthanasia. There are some instances wherein this would be the best solution, especially when you no longer wish to let your pet suffer and be in constant pain. Whatever your decision may be, it would best to discuss it with your veterinarian.

Usually, your pets will show some signs or little signals of their upcoming passing. During this period, do not forget to express your goodbyes and remain by their side until they have passed away. Do not leave them alone, and give your family members and some close friends to say their goodbyes as well. This will allow the animal to feel comforted and prepare themselves for what is to come.

Upon their death, it is completely understandable that you may not have fully accepted your loss yet. During this period, it is okay to feel blue and express yourself through various activities like crying or talking with a close friend about how you feel. Give yourself a period of mourning and to pay respects to your beloved companion.

Eventually, you will begin to accept their passing and move on with your life. Always remember your pet was probably at their happiest or most comfortable when they felt that you were as well, so they would not want you to become depressed and mope about them forever. Eventually, you will need to move on with life and accept that while they are gone, they will remain in your memories for a lifetime.
