Best Natural Ways To Control Mosquitoes

By Shawn Hunter

Insects and pests can be controlled much easily these days, thanks to the many manufacturers who keep introducing new products. The products introduced are chemical-based, which gives them the ability to kill insects within seconds if not instantly. Such a solution would be the best if only it did not degrade the environment and posed health risks to animals and human beings. It is the damage chemical-based products cause that some people resort to nature-based means. Some of the best natural ways to control mosquitoes is the subject of the rest of this article.

Clearing bushes and long grass around the house is the first step towards controlling mosquitoes. The nocturnal nature of these insects allows them to hunt for blood mostly at night. Otherwise, during the day, they stay in bushes and long grasses and hide until nightfall before they can come out. Removing all hiding places around the house forces them to relocate and move away. The bushes can also be sprayed with natural repellents to force them out.

Secondly, houses that are very dark also provide perfect spots for hiding. Such spots include walls that are dimly lit, wardrobes, and under the bed. Wardrobes can be shaken to chase the insects out and lock the doors and windows. The other spots should be removed or sealed off to deny access.

Mosquitoes need a safe and suitable breeding ground to lay eggs and breed young ones. Stagnant water and water collected in cans after rain make very good breeding grounds for the insects. They lay hundreds of eggs in water and within a short time, several young insects are moving around in need of blood to suck. One can prevent that from happening by ensuring that no water pools around the home. Water in cans may be poured and the containers removed.

Another suitable way of controlling mosquitoes is by using animals and insects that naturally prey on them. Such animals include tadpoles, which eat eggs laid by the insects. They also feed on young insects in water before they can mature and fly away. That would reduce their population greatly eventually leading to total elimination in the area.

Another way is to attract bats to the surrounding. It is approximated that a single bat can eat several thousands of mosquitoes in a single night. As such, having a few bats around the garden can highly reduce chances of being bitten at night. Using natural repellants such as citronella essential oil is also effective. One can make citronella candles and light them in the house in the evening or night to keep off the insects.

There are plants that are natural repellents of Insects like a mosquito. One of such plants is lemon balm. The plant is easy to plant and is very efficient at repelling the insect. It contains essential oils like geranial, geraniol, and citronellal which are known to be natural repellents. The oils can be 10 times better at the task than most manufactured products.

Finally, the insects can be repelled effectively by lavender oil. A few drops of the oil should be added into vegetable oil and then applied on exposed skin. The mixture that results has a very sweet smell to humans, but very repelling to a mosquito.
