In terms of DIY, it is all well and good knowing what you are doing, but the job takes time as well, and if it is just you alone, it is going to take a long time. If there are damaged areas in the floor, then attend to those first. The saw dust can be mopped up or wiped up with a wet cloth. You need to have a smooth finish before you start to do anything else. There are floor urethanes available for this purpose which come in an oil based variety and that of water.

There are different kinds of coats that can be applied in terms of varnish. You will find the water based and oil based varieties which both work well. One needs to be careful in the way that this varnish is applied so that it looks like a professional job. The floor has to be completely smooth and you may need to sand it down.

Often there are areas that have been damaged and this is where you need to focus your attention first and foremost. This area may have received heavy traffic and there could be more gaps between the floorboards. You need to use a heavy grit for sanding over here to make sure that you are getting a smooth surface before you start with the varnishing.

There are samples available. However, if you are not sure what color to match up with, then you can scratch a little piece off and take it into the shop. You will save a lot of time and money doing it like this. You will need to cover the floor with two to three coats.
