Exterior Painting And The Things To Avoid

By Phyllis Schroeder

Knowing that the price of the paints has doubled for over 20 years, it is also an assurance that the quality has been developed to last longer through research and development. So repainting your exterior walls is a costly process and nobody would like to do the same process after a couple of months. Nobody likes to spend again on the paints, painting materials, time and the labor for each painter or contractor.

Most exterior painting now last from 12 to almost 25 years, depending on the quality of the paint used. Though you use the best product and materials, there is no assurance that you will have a warranty of how long it will last. Here are some things that you should avoid when doing an exterior painting Cambridge MA to keep long lasting beauty and protection for you house paint.

Never apply the paint at the same day with the power washing. The washing only takes off all the dirt that stuck on the wall. As all of those are removed, you can start caulking the crevices and the cracks which will normally dries up 24 to 48 hours later. If the paint is applied at this time, the bonding of the cracks will not be done completely as it will be affected to the chemical of the paint and vice versa.

Never think that power washing replaces scraping. Power washing only removes the dirt and grime on the walls and do not remove the old paint. High pressure washing will also damage your wall especially if you have a wood surface. Thus, the best way to remove the old paints it to hand scrape it.

Never put a caulk over the old caulk. As much as possible, remove all of those so that you will not eventually create a new separation line. This is because the old caulks will eventually loosen its particles and create separation lines. Thus putting over a new one would make the same thing as its base is separating.

Wood surface with finish coat paints should not be painted. The flaking paint will only cause the new ones to flake with it. Thus, using a primer is always the best solution. This is because primers are designed to make better bonding materials, making sure that the finish coats will definitely last long.

Read the instructions, do not just apply. Each cans have printed instructions on how to use the product. If you have not noticed this, then your painting will not be as effective if you have read it.

Make sure that the paint has dried up before applying protection coatings. The coating could help the paint withstand whatever weather that will come. The coating can also be applied to the surfaces where stains are but this is much more effective if the contractor assure that they applied it properly.

Good contractors will follow all the suggestions without asking why because they already know what to do. Well it is always good to ask questions for you to observe if the work is rightfully done. Also ask your contractor if they are offering different services so all of your house queries could be attended instantly.
