Classic Florence Eiseman Clothes For Children

By Krystal Branch

Florence Eiseman is an iconic name in the fashion world when it comes to clothing for children. She and her late husband, Laurence, launched the business in 1945 with their first sale of pinafores to Marshall Fields. Her clothes were inspired by the philosophy that one should see the child first and only then notice the clothing. She was a stickler for quality fabrics and workmanship, with many of the clothes initially being finished by hand.

Florence did not like the ruffled and frilled skirts and petticoats for little girls that were worn at the time. She felt that simple A-line dresses were best suited to their figures. She also preferred bright colors to pastel pinks and blues. Her clothing was simply embellished with whimsical appliques like butterflies and flowers. Her clothes were a hit with mothers and generations of children have been dressed in her clothing, including those of celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor.

Early features of her designs included classic lines, bright colors, handcrafted details and collars that framed the face. Within ten years, she had become the first designer of clothes for children to receive the Nieman Marcus award for her contribution to fashion. She was also featured in a major retrospective at the Milwaukie Art Museum in 1985.

The brand has remained successful and is still going strong today. When Florence retired from daily involvement due to ill health, Teri Shapiro, her head designer, continued to nurture the brand. She was the first non-Eiseman to become an officer in the company. She said that when designing the clothing, it has always been important to keep designs fresh and trendy without losing the classic look of the brand.

The range has expanded over the years to include swimwear, play clothes and knitwear. It has also extended its range of baby clothes, including a variety of dresses, bloomers and rompers in cool and comfortable cotton blends. Fabrics are patterned with prints and stripes and are still embellished with delightful appliques which are a signature of the brand.

The clothing is still designed in Milwaukie and has been available for years at specialty stores. However, now mothers worldwide are able to dress their children in these clothes as they can be purchased from many online stores. One can examine the many different items on offer, searching according to size, color, type and gender.

This clothing is still noted for its attention to detail, including deep hemlines, French seams, and bound buttonholes. Items are lined and machine washable. Some of the items are reversible, including a multicolored seersucker dress and seersucker overalls with zoo animal appliques. There are floppy hats with floral and butterfly details to match.

The Florence Eiseman brand caters for all kinds of activities, whether going to school, playing outside, swimming in the pool or attending a special event. The brand has received numerous awards over the years and continues in a tradition of attention to detail and classical yet trendy designs. These clothes are of such quality that they can often be passed down through generations with little evidence of wear and tear.
