The Life Of A Bus Person

By George Dodson

Eating out can be fun. You can decide where to go and what you want to eat. On entering, your presence is graciously acknowledged by those at the restaurant?s reception. You can request for a tumbler of water or an additional napkin or two; they are there for the sole purpose of serving you. When you are done eating, you leave a tip for the waiter, snatch your items and go. Your expedition has come to a close. Someone else?s voyage however, is just starting. By ?someone?, I am referring to the busboy who makes the booth pleasant for the next customer after the previous customer leaves.

In both large and small restaurants, there is usually staff required to clean up after each customer and help the restaurant staff if and when they need it.

Busboys are not usual in America. Some offer to serve customers snacks and beverages even before the customer takes the initiative to do so. They may help serve the food if the restaurant is short-staffed or even otherwise.

?Bussing as a profession generates very poor income. It is the tips that they look forward to every day.

Small eateries like diners feature busboys carrying boxes in which used or new cutlery are heaped in. In upscale restaurants, dishes are carried one by one. Time is required for this as the busboy has to be careful and meticulous in carrying each plate.

Many a famous actor was, at an initial point in his or her life, a busboy for the sake of earning some pocket money perhaps when times were hard.

In his youth, Al Pacino worked as one.

Alec Baldwin worked at Studio 54 in New York.

Vietnamese president Ho Chi Minh was also a busboy in Parker House Hotel in Boston.

Jon Stewart was a ?busser? at a Mexican eatery.

Johnny Depp too was one at a point. Johnny Depp was also a busboy.

The next time you are out at your favorite restaurant, perhaps you ought to keep in mind that if the place looks scintillating, it is for the reason that the busboys that toil to maintain it. They deserve a little extra in tips; something you ought to consider as it is how they make their living. After all, you never know; maybe, just maybe, one of them will become famous and remember you for your token of gratitude.
