These are often considered to be the sturdiest and most intelligent of toy breeds. These tough little dogs, when full grown, can weight about seven pounds but have been known to be as heavy as fourteen and grow as high as 10.5". Their bodies are slightly disproportionate as they are not as tall as they are long.

With naturally long, silky fur, these dogs are beautiful, though most owners find that keeping them closely trimmed enhances the puppy look even in adults, and avoids the tendency to become matted. The coat is rather lightweight and low shed, making them perfect for allergy sufferers, and they can be many shades of cream, white, browns and blacks. Body shape for this breed is easiest to describe as stocky and barrel chested with a curled plume tail that rides up over their straight back. The heads are kind of round and have high set ears that bend and hang. Their muzzles are short and rectangular, centered with a squared nose and featuring black lips.

In general, this is a breed that has very few health issues, though some eye problems may come with age and dry skin may occur if not properly groomed. Kept in good physical shape, these dogs tend to live up to fifteen years. They can be very active and playful but do have a few social needs of which any potential owner should be made aware.

Interested parties should make sure they are willing to dedicate a lot of time to these pets because they crave affection from humans. They love to frolic and play and obsessively seek cuddles, praises and lots of snuggles and petting. The problem is that they become a bit dependent on this attention and if they don't get enough they may act out through negative behaviors such as extra barking and destructive chewing.

Social interaction, both with humans and other dogs, is important to start quite young so that they can develop confidence and hone their naturally extroverted temperament that makes them good with people of all ages. Most of them love to learn new tricks and are great with obedience and agility training, especially when food is used as a reward. Owners will need patience because the pups do tend to have difficulty when it comes to house breaking.

Aggression is not part of their make up but these pups like do like to play watchdog, loudly announcing the arrival of every person who comes in the vicinity of the home. They bark a lot so owners need to be prepared to regularly curtail this behavior or learn to accept it.
