With the world around us brimming with knowledge and information piling up each day, unless we learn how to read faster, we are certain to be left behind. There are countless reading materials but we do not have the time to read through all of them. By mastering some techniques for it, we may actually be able to read faster and make up for lost time. It is definitely not magic and demands a lot of practice, consistency and sincerity. With time, we can master this skill successfully.

How to Read Faster using Special Techniques: You can actually read much quicker, if you do away with vocalization because by sounding out every word, you tend to lose precious time. It is advisable to read out chunks of words or even complete sentences instead of one word at a time.Avoid rereading text that has been already read once since that is likely to slow you down. Try to get the meaning by glancing through the rest of the text.You can try to move your hands down a page as you read slowly. This way, the hand sets the speed for your eyes to read.

Knowing how to read faster and comprehension is not only good for students alone, researchers, office workers, lecturers, etc need to know the skills of fast reading because it will help in making your work finish on time and you will also have more time for family and friends. Some people vocalize words as they read along. Vocalization slows down your reading speed. Research has proven that vocalization retards the assimilation capabilities of your brain. So, if your still in the category of readers that are still vocalizing, stop it right away.

IDENTIFY YOUR SPEED. Identifying your reading speed will definitely help you to know how you have progressed in your endeavor to read faster. Therefore, take write ups with specified word count and try to know your speed via quantity of words read per hour.Focusing on the content and subject matter you are reading will help you understand it faster. Therefore, stop thinking about unnecessary things like the romance date you had the previous day, financial problems, family problems and other things that will distract you from what you are doing at that particular time. It has been proven that most people do not understand or assimilate what they are reading just because of unnecessary distraction.

There are three distinct steps that will enable you to dramatically increase your reading speed, and at the same time improve your comprehension of the material that you are reading. The first step is to preview your text. Previewing is done at very high speed. You want to run your hand down each page of your text from the top to the bottom of the page in no more than two seconds per page. At this speed you are looking for the main idea of the text, and to familiarize yourself with its major formatting. For example, does it have chapters, headings, sub-headings or pictures?

Now that you have the main idea of the text, you are ready to begin your second step. During this step your goal is to find the most important information. The most important details include the new vocabulary, the main ideas, and the answers to questions. Now you read at fast as you can comprehend. Write down any new vocabulary words. Generally, 80% of learning a new topic is learning the vocabulary. Next write down the headings, and sub-headings found in each chapter. Finally, you want to write down each of the questions in the text. Questions that are in the chapter, as well as questions that are at the end of the chapter should both be written down.

Start by determining your purpose for reading and getting a general idea of what the book or chapter is about. Do you require detailed information or general knowledge on the subject? Do you need to read everything or are you searching for specific facts? Is the reading difficult, technical or easy? By answering these questions, you will determine how the information should be read and if you should read it quickly or more slowly to understand it. Before you start reading, glance through the chapter looking at the headings and beginning sentences of the paragraphs to understand what information is contained within the chapter.When reading, use your hand as a speed guide. Your eyes will follow the hand's movement and you will automatically be reading faster.
