What Does EMP Hardening Do

By Paulette Short

Modern living seems to have a major reliance on electronically based technologies. They are there to help make everyone's life so much easier, and yet were an electromagnetic pulse to affect the area so many of these systems would be made useless. As a consequence a lot of businesses are starting to invest in protection for these vulnerable systems. This protection is known as EMP hardening.

Daily life would be so very different if these prudent measures were not taken. As an illustration if such an event happened while you were at work, all systems would go offline . Naturally you would worry about your family, but there would be no cell phone coverage and the landlines don't work either. The only option left is for you to return home and check.

Your drive home is fraught with danger, as all of the normal traffic controls are no longer there. There are no lights at the intersections. With everyone worrying about their own families there are plenty of incidents and accidents. With no cell phones working it is impossible to alert the emergency services to any of these.

Even trying to get fuel for your car is going to be difficult as the fuel pumps will no longer work. Unless you are fortunate enough to know of a very old fashioned gas station who still hand pump their fuel. Even if you do know of such a gas station you should be prepared for long queues.. Tempers will be short as people slowly come to terms with how their lives have changed so drastically.

The only way that you can pay for fuel is with cash. Not only will the card readers not work at the gas station, but the bank ATMs will also not function. So the only cash that you have will be what you are carrying with you. Your family will have been facing a similar scenario. As the family car had not been parked underground it will not work so there has been no trip to the grocery store.

Not only that no one will know what is happening. The TV and radio networks will have all been knocked offline, and there will also be no internet. People will be totally reliant on the civil authorities and the military to keep everyone informed about the ongoing situation.

On a personal level there are some who claim it is worthwhile keeping a cell phone, a transistor radio and walkie-talkies inside an old microwave oven. Opinion is divided as to whether the oven should be grounded or not, just in case the ground lead could cause problems. The theory behind this is that the oven is designed not to let microwaves out, so an electromagnetic pulse shouldn't be able to enter.

Thankfully businesses are now protecting their systems with EMP hardening. This process will automatically shut the systems down and take them offline to protect them. The benefit is that no data will have been lost, but everything has to be manually reset and brought back online which will take time. There is much to be said for living by the Scouting movement's motto of 'Be Prepared'.
