Septic Tank Treatment Benefits For Household Waste

By Sarah Jones

Many homes around the world enjoy the benefits of septic tank treatment for the sewage produced by the members of the household. These systems are small on-site sewage disposal systems consisting of a large vault and leach lines. While some systems are more elaborate than others, in an ideal situation, the unit needs nothing else.

There are many environmental advantages of these systems when they are maintained correctly. They protect both ground and surface waters. This prevents contamination of nearby wells, rivers and creeks. It is essential to protect potable water supplies of the homes and neighbors. In addition, fish and wildlife also benefit from the protection.

Although most homes inside cities or towns are connected to a larger municipal sewage disposal plant, the distance between homes in a rural setting make this impractical. Instead, these homes have there own small scale sewage disposal system built on the site. Most include tanks of a minimum of 1000 gallons and 300 or more feet of leach lines, allowing effluent water to be effectively filtered by the soil.

The use of these systems is not limited to rural areas but often also found in cities. On the outskirts of towns, homes may have been annexed that were built before a system was available. Homes in areas where municipal lines are not available due to topographical features may have their own disposal center on-site; however, municipal codes may require pumping of waste to access a municipal system.

These systems help to prevent spread of diseases through waste materials. Germs in the waste of individual with diseases such as dysentery or hepatitis can spread to others without proper disposal of human waste. The drain field provides filtration of the contaminates, allowing these germs to die without passing the infection. In areas where proper sanitation is not available, disease often affect the young, elderly and those ill from other causes.

Before rural homes had these systems they often depended on pit toilets and cesspools. Both these units were smelly. In addition, cesspools could be flooded by heavy rains or snow melt causing contamination of surface waters. The sealed unit offers a much better solution that eliminates odors when properly maintained. In fact, one of the signs that a system may require maintenance is that of a foul odor.

Connecting to a municipal sewer can be expensive. There is often a tap in fee followed by monthly service charges that add up to several hundred dollars annually. With on-site systems, the only expense is pumping every two to three years. Gravity flow systems require no electricity or other power to operate; however, in certain locations, a pump system may be require using a small amount of power each month.

There are lots of benefits of septic tank treatment of sewage created in the house. Modern plumbing techniques that use these systems help to ensure the health of a family. They also protect the surroundings from dangers affecting wildlife due to improper disposal of human waste.
