Using A Cyc Wall To Create An Alternate Reality

By Rena Hudson

A Cyc wall is a type of theatrical space called a cyclorama. This is a cylindrical theater which creates a 360 degree panoramic experience for the viewer. In film and video production, the effect makes it appear that actors are floating in an infinite white space. Another production technique that shares some characteristics is the green screen technique. Actors are filmed in front of a green backdrop. The backdrop is deleted and other sets are insert during the video editing process.

The purpose of these types of walls is to create the illusion that an actor is floating in space. A cyclorama is not easy to build. The slightest imperfection can ruin the effect. This is not a weekend do it yourself project. One example of the complexity is that the base of the structure is curved. The curved shape is necessary to create the effect of floating in space.

It is definitely not a weekend do-it-your project. The curvature of the base is the most difficult part to construct. The curves are required to produce the effect of floating in infinite space. Fortunately, there are many videos on the social media that document the construction. These are made by professional set designers. Plans and kits can be purchased on the internet from professionals.

A large studio space is required and not everyone can afford to rent such a big space. There are portable models that are manufactured. Some of these are placed on a table. Screens and backdrops can be used to create a similar effect. These kits and portable models may be a good alternatives for those who lack the resources to build a large studio dedicated to this type theatrical space.

A great way to gather information about designing and building a studio is to watch the many videos available on the internet. These videos explain in detail the step-by-step process the producers followed in constructing their space. Most important the videos explain the most common mistakes that are made that can turn a project into a complete disaster.

The illusion of floating in a void of unlimited space is very realistic. It is an effective technique that creates a magical quality in an advertisement, feature length movie, or music video. Some people say that it looks like a depiction of heaven. It is almost as if people and things are floating among the clouds in infinite space.

Most studios are constructed from plywood or some type of particle board. The most difficult part of the construction is the curvature of the base. The curved aspect of the design is important in giving the illusion of unlimited space. Painting of the walls has to be done perfectly. If the paint is not applied in a perfectly even way the effect will be lost.

Filming with a cyc wall is becoming a popular production technique. Music videos, television commercials and even full length feature movies are now using cyclorama studios to create amazing scenes. The effect that is produced is visceral and powerful. It resonates with viewers. It was only a short time ago that only well-funded professionals had access to these types of production technique. Now that kits and plans are available for sale, anyone with the determination and resources can build one.
