Scandinavian home furniture design is primarily thought of as minimalistic and functionalistic. IKEA furniture is an example of that. Within functionalistic view, furniture needed to be suitable for daily usage and remain affordable to everyday people. This particular perception in the functionalism never really started to become the reality with regards to the Scandinavian vintage furniture, mainly because they were also high-priced in their beginning. The actual cause of this has been their premium quality as well as the pricey elements used to produce the furnitures.

When we pay attention to the way this furniture was initially created, they were sometimes industrial manufactured or made by hand. An illustration of a designer who mainly built hand made chairs will be Kaare Klint. The Swan Chair by Arne Jacobsen can be an example of a chair that's industrial made. The explanation that the Swan Chair was industrial manufactured was that it was extremely hard to produce the shape of the chair manually from the desired material. When we talk about industrial creation it is important to underline that we don't mean large scale production we all know it to day. Inside a 1930-1960 perspective industrial creation simply means that the furniture were machine made.

Referring to Scandinavian design from around time period from 1930 to 1960 it is crucial not just to consider retro chairs. The designers from this time period also made a lot of other appealing design items which all is very popular these days. The Globe created by Poul Henningsen and wood made toys created by Kay Bojesen are great examples here off. Arne Jacobsen is another designer whom created not only chairs. When he designed the Royal SAS Hotel he also designed the full interior personally, ranking from chairs to silverware.
