Information About Contract Working Dogs

By Amy Taylor

As man learned about the importance of having animals at their villages, the dog happened to be the luckiest to be domesticated first. The unique character of this species made them very reliable to the extent that they have been used as military dogs to help during wars. Their limited number made the defense department to consider getting informed about contract working dogs.

There is much which remain unknown about these contract animals. You will only have a chance of learning about them once you know how it all started. Military dogs though useful were limited in numbers in most cases. It is for this reason that selected companies were given opportunities to train local dogs into becoming military useful.

These companies have a heavy task of ensuring that they train them to attain the recommended standards for military activities mainly. It is tough but the only way through. The training should cover rescue sessions, combat and also detection of hidden explosives. The animal can only be flown to their destination once they have mastered all these skills.

The animal will always remain to be the sole property of the company that has been given the contract. The military will never have the ownership. It is therefore expected for the soldiers only to provide the feeding of the dog and taking them to their kennels. It is the actual owner to ensure that the dogs welfare is well taken care of.

They are never accorded the care and attention that they deserve making them experience great sufferings. To begin with, they are employed dogs which mean they are only supposed to be working all through till the mission is over. In other cases, they are usually not granted the short break enjoyed by the military dogs which some how meant to fully cover the payment made to hire them.

The worst is when the dog becomes incapacitated by either an injury, sickness or even age. The user has no obligation of ensuring the animals goes back to the owner. It lies upon the company to keep track of how their canines are progressing and undertake the role of transporting them back home whenever they cannot work anymore.

There have been instances that were reported where a dog was shot dead by the service men due to desertion. Though this is an acceptable punishment in these avenues, it is not fair to the dog since the running away may be due to improper training, a failure to their trainer. Others are neglected by their companies for not being able to work again thus left suffering more.

The only means of making these canines feel appreciated is through getting them back into homes through adopting them. The procedure of adopting a military dog is more cumbersome than that of a contract dog. It is, however, advisable that you ensure that the animal you are dealing with can easily be domesticated since the training received was for a war zone, not a peaceful home.
