Why An NJ Summer Riding Camp Might Be A Perfect Fit For Your Little Girl

By Amanda Hill

There is something about horses and young girls. As strange as it may seem, most little girls adore horses, even those who never seen one in the flesh. If your daughter is captivated by Derby winners, and shows it by pinning their portraits on the walls of her bedroom, you need to seriously consider allowing her to participate in a NJ summer riding camp. You will be amazed at the young woman who returns.

If you have a little one struggling with self-esteem and lack of confidence, this is a good place for her to get a big boost. As she learns to control an animal that can weigh a thousand pounds or more, with just her body and some words of encouragement, she will quickly begin to feel more powerful and in control of her environment. These camps are designed to help all the kids succeed and to encourage team work in a non-competitive way.

Some little girls are shy and withdrawn. These kids frequently have trouble fitting in with their peers. At horse camps however, they are around other girls who have the same love of horses. Instead of introductions being awkward, most have plenty to talk about as they learn equestrian techniques and the responsibilities of caring for horses and equipment.

Instructors are mindful of the dangers inherent in pairing small children with animals that weigh half a ton. Safety is a number one priority. All the girls are taught how to handle the animals safely and how to avoid mistakes that can have serious consequences. Girls work together to help and remind one another of the lessons learned.

If you have a child who tends to sit and stare at a computer screen all day, camp is a great place to remind her of all that the outdoors has to offer. At most horse camps use of electronic devices is extremely limited or banned altogether except for a phone with a camera function. Instead girls are encouraged to actively engage one another in conversation, which helps develop critical social skills.

Girls are on their horses for hours each day. They are outdoors enjoying fresh air and lots of physical activity. Some think the horses are the ones doing the work, but that's not true.

The rider has to use her whole body to control the animal while balancing on its back. Lifting hay bales, hauling water buckets, and shoveling manure are all great aerobics workouts. Girls are expected to care for these horses as if they were their own.

Most of all the girls have fun at camp. Even the most serious get into the spirit and learn to relax and enjoy the pleasure riding brings. It's not all work and lessons. Instructors set up interesting games that allow the girls to play while they are learning. At the end of the summer, your daughter will have stories to tell and a new air of confidence.
