Even if you are a passionate animal lover, you have to be careful when purchasing a new puppy. You should consider your life style, your financial circumstances, your living accommodations, and the time you have to devote to a pet. If you are looking for a small animal with a big personality, that will be a great companion and won't take up much room, you should look at the Maltese puppies Texas dog lovers rave about.

This was one of the first of the toy breeds. They have been around for centuries. In ancient Greece and Rome, the dogs were revered for their ability to heal. The pups were placed on pillows next to the heads of ailing loved ones. Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria both loved their Maltese companions. The breed was introduced to the United States around 1800 at the Westminster Kennel Club shows.

These small canines are natural hams that love people and attention. They are so eager to please that training them is easy with the use of plenty of treats. Like all pets, these dogs must be socialized early. Exposing them to sights, sounds, experiences, and people when they are young will stimulate them and encourage their natural curiosity and exuberance. When you are choosing a puppy, it's a good idea to look for the one that is friendly, but not overly aggressive or shy.

They may not look like it, but these dogs are active. They love playing and taking leisurely walks. Vets recommend avoiding long walks however, until the pups are at least eight months old. Their bones won't be fully developed until then. Maltese are not yard dogs. They cannot tolerate excessive heat or cold.

A lot of breeders discourage families with little kids from purchasing one of these little dogs. Even though they have a lot of energy, and are generally very healthy animals, they are still quite small. They can be injured if dropped or stepped on. Maltese are more successful in homes with older children and adults who know how to handle them.

Their coats are long and silky, but these dogs are not big shedders. They don't have the undercoats of other breeds that will shed profusely. Some of these dogs tend to get tear stains which can be eliminated with a damp cloth. The dogs must be brushed and combed daily, even those that are clipped.

Maltese are pretty healthy dogs. You can expect your pet to live a dozen years or more. If you buy your puppy from a reputable breeder, you should be able to get the health clearances on the parents. You will be looking to see if they were cleared for hip and elbow dysplasia, von Willebrand's disease, and hypothyroidism in particular.

Most pets become family members. They have their own distinctive personalities and idiosyncrasies just like the people they live with. It's important, for the owners and the pets, that the personalities and idiosyncrasies be compatible
