Find Fun Local Activities In Rome

By Michelle Ross

Rome, Italy, is one of the greatest cities on earth. It's close to other famous places, but many visitors choose to focus on this magnificent center of art, architecture, history, and culture. There are so many sights to see and fun local activities in Rome that it doesn't even have to cost a lot to have a memorable time.

Sightseeing is inevitable when in Rome. Every street is picturesque, and the famous sights are simply not to be missed. Everyone should throw a coin into the Trivoli Fountain, climb the Spanish steps, see the towering wreck that is the Colosseum, and wander through the ruins of the Forum. Climbing a Roman hill and following an ancient road are important. All the boring art history slides and the textbooks on ancient empires come alive before your very eyes.

Walking the streets of Rome is an adventure in itself. Plan to find the Piazza del Popolo, a marvelous example of civic pride, and join the evening promenade down the Via del Corso. The huge plaza is breathtaking and the sight of residents out enjoying their city is special. The shops of the Via del Corso are world famous; even window shopping is fun. You will see why Italian leather is legendary and Roman fashions endlessly popular.

It will probably be easy to find a festival no matter when you visit. Rome, Of course, is a major religious center, and the celebrations of Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas are amazing. For instance, at Christmas there are a hundred nativity scenes throughout the city.

Every district of Rome has its own patron saint. The saint's day is celebrated every year. There is singing, dancing, and feasting during the celebration. These are great ways to meet local residents and really get to know this facet of Roman culture.

The January Jazz Fest is a non-religious event that has become a tradition. Although winters in Rome can be cold and wet, walking is usually still feasible. Many people prefer to visit during the off-season when the summer crowds are gone and the city is more truly itself. Taking a train or bus to nearby attractions is a good way to see other parts of the city and the countryside.

Of course, Italy is also famous for food. Whether your taste runs to elegant restaurants or intimate family-run trattorias, it's easy to find great places to eat. Roman dishes are rich and satisfying, and their desserts are fabulous. Pasta, naturally, is almost a ritual, and good wines are offered by waiters who take a personal interest in your enjoyment.

Museums of every description will help you get a feel for the centuries of Roman achievement that shaped the world. The Vatican Museum is a treasure trove you have to experience to believe. A trip to Italy's greatest city is a crash course in why art and history are important.
